At first, it may seem reasonable to fund only research that has immediate practical value. Governments have limited budgets, and societies face urgent problems such as disease, climate change and energy security. From this perspective, science should focus on what can be applied quickly.
However, the history of science suggests that this view is too narrow. Many breakthroughs began as curiosity-driven research, without a clear practical goal. A discovery may look useless at first, but later become essential when a new technology, crisis or question appears. This is one reason why pure research still matters.
At the same time, not every scientific project is automatically justified. Research can raise ethical concerns, especially when it involves human participants, dangerous technologies or dual-use findings that could be misused. This means that pursuing knowledge requires transparency, peer review and public accountability.
On balance, I would argue that knowledge should be pursued for its own sake, but not without limits. Science needs freedom to explore the unknown, yet it also needs ethical safeguards. The strongest research culture is one that protects curiosity while taking responsibility for its consequences.
