Presenter: Today we are talking about food and the environment. Many people think that food choices are only about health, but they can also affect the planet.
One important problem is food waste. People often buy too much food, and then they throw some of it away. This wastes money, but it also wastes water, energy and transport. For example, if fruit travels a long distance and then nobody eats it, all the energy used to produce and transport it is wasted too.
Another issue is packaging. Some snacks and ready meals come in a lot of plastic. This creates more rubbish. A better solution is to choose fresh food with less packaging when possible.
Food transport is important too. Some food travels hundreds or even thousands of kilometres before it reaches shops. This can increase pollution. Buying local food can be a good idea if it is available and not too expensive.
So, what can we do? We can plan meals before shopping, use leftovers and buy only what we need. We can also choose local fruit and vegetables more often. If families shop more carefully, they will waste less food and save money.
The main idea is simple: our food choices can affect the environment, but small everyday changes can make them better.
